There are few things more refreshing on a scorching summer’s day than a dip in the water. Whether you’re looking for a pool or hoping to explore a swimming hole courtesy of Mother Nature, Avon offers a variety of places to cool off, splash around, and get your money’s worth out of your sunscreen. Consider dipping into the following:
Nottingham Lake
Nottingham Lake is at the heart of Avon’s outdoor-friendly lifestyle and features a designated swimming area open from 10am to 8pm through August. No lifeguard is on duty, so swimmers must swim at their own risk. Staying within the perimeter is important, as well. The lake is open to many other water activities, so going beyond the buoy is dangerous.
Booth Lake
If you’re looking for a leisurely swim, Booth Lake is not for you. If you’re looking for a mountain adventure, it’s an excellent option. Accessing Booth Lake requires a roughly 10-mile (round trip) hike through aspens, wildflowers, and evergreens. It features clear waters and stunning surroundings, but getting there isn’t just half the battle; it’s all of it. This lake isn’t recommended for anyone who struggles at altitude or steep grades, but it’s highly rewarding for those able to complete the journey.
Eagle Pool
The Eagle Pool is a large outdoor facility with zero-depth entry, a mix of small and large waterslides, and multiple lap lanes. It’s a good option for those just learning to swim, as well as those who want to put in some serious minutes freestyling. A skating rink is located onsite, just in case you want to trade your breaststroke for a toe loop.
Gypsum Creek Pool
If you’re looking for a simple pool that’ll tap into your inner nostalgia and remind you of games of Marco Polo and ring toss of yore, the Gypsum Creek Pool is the ideal option. What it lacks in bells and whistles it makes up for in mountain views and outdoor scenery. Members of the Gypsum Rec Center can use the pool for free, and daily passes are available for nonmembers, as well.
Avon Recreation Center
Avon Recreation Center is a great choice if you want to get out of the heat entirely. This aquatics center’s indoor facility offers a five-lane lap pool, a kid's pool with zero-depth entry, a lazy river, a water slide, a diving board, and a climbing wall. It’s attractive to serious swimmers who hope to get their heart rates up, as well as those just looking to make a splash in their plans.
Whether you’re looking for a place to practice your butterfly or somewhere to perfect your cannonball, Avon delivers. Jump into the deep end of summer while you can; autumn will be here before you know it.
