It doesn’t have to be the Fourth of July or New Year’s Eve to appreciate fireworks; in Avon, Martin Luther King Jr. weekend is known for its flair (and flare). Read on to learn what you need to know about this mountain celebration.
When and Where
An annual event in its third year, Fireworks in Avon takes place on Saturday, January 18th at 6:00 PM, although festivities begin at 5:30 PM and last until 7:00 PM. Flock to Harry A. Nottingham Park to enjoy the winter skies, partake in free peppermint schnapps and hot cocoa, enjoy famous Beaver Creek Resort chocolate chip cookies (while supplies last), and watch an exceptional performance by the Battle Mountain Drumline.
Nottingham Lake public ice skating will be closed all day to allow for the proper setup of the fireworks show. If Mother Nature refuses to cooperate and the show is canceled, this will be broadcast via Avon’s Facebook and Instagram accounts and the town’s website.
What to Bring
While the only thing you technically need to bring is yourself, it’s recommended that you dress warm (ideally in layers) and wear comfortable shoes. You should also bring your ID to imbibe in the peppermint schnapps.
You should *not* bring any pets, as they are prohibited. This is to protect not only the participants but furry family members, as well. Your dog is probably not a huge fan of fireworks anyway; they’d rather stay home and watch Petflix.
Single-use plastic bottles, weapons, laser pointers, illegal substances, and drones are also prohibited. You can’t bring your fireworks; leave those to the professionals.
Where to Park
Using public transportation is always recommended when attending local events, as is walking or biking if you live nearby and the sidewalks aren’t icy or the temperatures aren't too frigid. This helps cut down on traffic and makes it easier to get into an event, home, and into your warm bed afterward.
If you’re driving, the town of Avon provides free parking for three hours at town-owned parking stalls located at the following locations:
Beyond three hours, parkers are required to pay $1 per hour. Overnight parking is not allowed without the approval of the Avon Police Department, and, of note, the Avon Elementary School parking lots will be closed temporarily.
