Something about longer days and warmer weather encourages us to ditch Netflix for nature. Fortunately, Avon, Colorado offers many places to lace up your hiking boots and meld with Mother Earth. A few of our favorite routes include the following:
Five Senses and Beaver Lake Trail
The Five Senses and Beaver Lake Trail is a moderately challenging route that takes most people roughly three hours to complete and covers over six miles. It’s a hugely popular spot, so don’t expect too much seclusion, and it welcomes dogs as long as they’re leashed. While you can venture out any time of year (assuming the trail isn’t closed), the most optimal time is late spring to mid-fall. That’s when this area truly awes.
Herring Cove Trail
Herring Cove Trail is a perfect option for family outings. It features multiple trail distances (from under three to nearly four miles) and offers stunning views of rugged mountain peaks and vivacious wildlife. It’s most inviting from early spring to late fall, and its elevation gain (520 feet) is moderate, making it an excellent choice for those who tend to cop at attitude when it comes to altitude.
Meadow Mountain Trail
Meadow Mountain Trail is a moderate trail of 4.5 miles (one way) and nearly 2,000 feet in elevation gain. It’s full of fun but challenging areas and prime lunch spots offering views of the Beaver Creek ski area and the Gore Range. The trail was once a ski resort, and hikers can still see remnants of old runs. Fun fact: It was once used as a lettuce farm, too.
West Avon Preserve
The West Avon Preserve is not a trail but a family of trails. Routes ranging from walkable and easy to sweaty and strenuous, this preserve offers something for hikers of all levels. Whether after a sunset stroll or panoramic views of town coupled with a challenging workout, you’ll find your footing here. If you venture out before April 15th, check ahead: certain trails are closed during winter.
Hanging Lake Trail
Hanging Lake Trail is an hour’s drive from Avon, but most folks find it’s worth the gas money. Nestled in the majestic canyons of Glenwood, Hanging Lake is a steep trail that isn’t particularly long (only 1.2 miles) but is rigorous and craggy. Full of waterfalls, red rock, and luscious forestry, it’s particularly appealing for those looking for a rewarding and beautiful challenge. Due to hazardous conditions, this trail isn’t open during the winter; it’s slotted to reopen in May or June.
