Skiing Destinations Near Avon, Colorado

It’s that time of year again: time to dust off your Nordicas, zip up your jacket, and put on your goggles…ski season is here! If you live in or near Avon, you’re in luck: there are several ski resorts practically in your backyard. Here’s how far you need to go for epic snow:

Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek is considered Avon’s “main” resort, only two miles from town. It’s an ideal destination for those who want their skiing to come with a side of spectacular mountain views. The resort itself is well known for its wide variety. It features all types of terrain, providing options for skiing novices, as well as seasoned thrillseekers and everyone in between. The alpine village is another draw, offering shopping, dining, and a chance to share snowy triumphs around the campfire.

Vail

Vail, located 10 miles from Avon, is the largest ski resort in Colorado, offering snowgoers more than 5,000 skiable acres, 31 lifts, and 193 trails. It caters to all skiing levels, with gentle terrain that’s perfect for those who are just learning, and steep slopes ideal for those who lack fear. The resort offers many clinics, as well, including those based on specific techniques like freestyle skiing.

Ski Cooper

Ski Cooper doesn’t get the press of its bigger, more popular peers, but this resort is the perfect choice for those looking for a down-to-earth experience at affordable prices. Located in Leadville (27 miles from Avon), Ski Cooper was once a training ground for those fighting in World War II. Today, it serves as one of the oldest ski resorts in the state. It caters to beginners, moderates, and expert skiers who enjoy tree skiing, as well as those who dislike lift lines.

Copper Mountain

Copper Mountain is located 29 miles from Avon. It’s a large resort that offers snow lovers all sorts of options (from groomers and steeps to bowls and trees). While it’s well-known and long-established, it tends to lack the crowds drawn to places like Keystone and A-Basin, which means less waiting and more gliding. Its variety caters to different skiing abilities; whether you only ski blacks or you’re still practicing your pizza technique, you can find something that challenges you without terrifying you.

One of the most frustrating aspects of skiing is the traffic. If you live in Avon, this doesn’t have to be an issue. Choose one of the nearby locations and make sure your ski runs don’t come with rush hour.
