One of the most attractive aspects of living in Colorado is easy access to the great outdoors. Camping, in particular, is plentiful, with the perfect spot seemingly around every corner and under every pine tree. If you live in Avon, this is even truer: there are many nearby locations that offer stunning views, thrilling adventures, and coveted peace and quiet. Consider the following:
Wandering Moose Meadows
Wandering Moose Meadows is an enticing spot for anyone living in Summit or Park County. With 41 acres, the grounds offer campers a chance to hike through a national forest and flyfish in Sacramento Creek. The mountain views are magnificent. Don’t post pictures on social media; more people will move here.
Gore Creek Campground
Gore Creek Campground is located on the old Vail Pass Road and features eight walk-in tent sites and 16 back-in sites. It’s an extremely popular spot, partly due to its proximity to Vail, so perhaps not the best option if you want to avoid people. It’s known for its bear activity, as well, so make sure you take precautions by carrying bear spray, keeping food and garbage sealed, and not talking to any animals you don’t know.
Gold Park Campground
Gold Park Campground is located in the Holy Cross Wilderness area, sandwiched between the Homestake Reservoir and a forested valley. It’s a popular site for hiking, biking, and fishing, and close enough to Vail for campers who want to enjoy some fine dining before they start roughing it.
Camp Hale
Camp Hale, between Leadville and Vail, is the ideal camping spot for those with an appreciation for history; it was a training camp for the Army during World War II and the site still has a few remnants from the past. It features 21 campsites and allows for RVs up to 60 feet long. Reservations can be made online.
Blodgett Campground
Blodgett Campground is a free site accessible to both Mother Nature mavens and novices. The area isn’t known for its amenities (outside of picnic tables and fire pits), but it offers a lot to do, including rock climbing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. It’s roughly 20 miles from Avon and open on a first-come, first-served basis.
It’s time to dust off your tent, roll out your sleeping bags, scrub your canteens, and celebrate the season. With these spots, you’re sure to be a happy camper wherever you go.
