The Perfect Colorado Road Trip

As summer gets into full swing and the meadows and mountainsides spring to life once again, there’s no better way to take in our gorgeous state than a quintessential Colorado road trip. Starting from Avon, there are countless enviable destinations to explore over the course of a long weekend. Here are some spots we wouldn’t miss on our perfect Colorado road trip.

Salida

This cozy mountain town is situated in the heart of the Rockies, adjacent to the Arkansas River and nearby Monarch Mountain. Year-round outdoor activities abound in Salida, Colorado, but the city truly comes alive in the summertime. Book a whitewater rafting trip with one of the numerous outfitters along the Arkansas River or spend the crisp mornings hiking one of Chaffee County’s numerous 14ers. Locally owned breweries, restaurants, and bars are aplenty along downtown’s historic strip so plan to spend a full day here to get the most of it.

Gunnison

Blue Mesa Reservoir in Gunnison, Colorado offers some of the state’s best fly fishing and paddle-sport adventures. The large, picturesque body of water stays cool throughout summer’s hottest months. For those desiring sweeping landscapes and a deep gorge, check out Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This lesser visited national park will certainly take your breath away. Stunning hikes weave around the rim of the gorge while a few dip down into it, offering brave trekkers a new perspective of the epic scenery.

Ouray

Travel back in time with a visit to Ouray, Colorado. This former mining town boasts museums, historic buildings, hiking trails, and more. Often called “The Switzerland of the West” the surrounding San Juan mountains are home to countless mountain biking and hiking trails. After getting acquainted with the state’s natural beauty, sooth sore muscles with a soak in Ouray’s hot springs.

Silverton

After a morning spent exploring Ouray, drive down the Million Dollar Highway for stunning views of the San Juans. This winding, high elevation road connects these two secluded towns offering drivers little-seen panoramic views. Upon arriving in Silverton, walk down the main historic street and enjoy ducking into cozy shops, museums, and bars. Camp near town to take advantage of some of the most beautiful hikes in the state, like Island Lake.

Telluride

This tucked-away mountain town can be difficult to reach in the span of one weekend, but it fits the bill for an epic Colorado road trip destination. Plan your trip to fall on one of the city’s numerous festivals or go in late summer to miss the tourists and enjoy a quieter Telluride. Hike the town’s Via Ferrata – an iron trail that traverses the mountains – or take the gondola up the ski mountain for breathtaking views. Hike, fly fish, or book a horseback ride to get a feel for what this area was like when people explored from the saddle.
