Tips for Hosting a Movie Night

Hosting a movie night is a great way to engage in fun without breaking the bank or wearing anything other than pajamas. To help your cinematic endeavors receive nothing but rave reviews, consider the following at-home theater tips:

Cater to Your Audience

The first step to a drama-free movie night (even if you’re watching a drama) is to cater to your audience. Keep in mind the ages in attendance, and make sure you don’t show anything that’ll get you in trouble with someone’s adult. Consider the attendees' interest, too: If you’re showing movies to kids, for example, you probably want to steer clear of documentaries or films with subtitles.

Have Plenty of Sitting Spots

You don’t need a movie room full of cushy recliners that rival those found in theaters, but you need plenty of space for people to sit (because a standing room only probably won’t cut it in your living room). The best movie “chairs” tend to be floor pillows, sofas, and bean bags—anything comfy, cozy, and inviting enough for a two-to-three-hour session.

Go Big on Snacks

Go big and include as many cinematic favorites as desired, such as popcorn, soda, nachos, Whoppers, Dots, Hot Tamales, Milk Duds, and Sour Patch Kids. If you want to impress your moviegoers, consider renting a popcorn machine, a chocolate fountain, or a cotton candy machine.

Beware of Allergies

When planning your kitchen concession stand, be aware of any food allergies your guests might have. It’s often best to avoid certain foods altogether if anyone allergic is attending (especially when kids are involved). This prevents those with allergies from accidentally ingesting something they shouldn’t and prevents them from feeling left out.

Start Early

There is little point in hosting a movie night if everyone sleeps through all the action. Starting early, before eyelids get heavy, is your best bet to ensure your evening doesn’t become a literal snoozefest. If you want to play it extremely safe, start well before the sun goes down; there’s no shame in your movie night becoming a matinee.

Hosting a moving night is a fun, simple, and affordable way to spend an evening with laughs, gasps, or edge-of-your-seat thrills. Remember the above tips to ensure a successful showing and prevent your party from turning into a horror show.
