One of the best things about living in Avon is the abundance of outdoor adventure. Hiking and biking, in particular, can be done on various trails all across town. From simple to strenuous to somewhere in between, these are our favorites:
Eagle Valley Trail
The Eagle Valley Trail meanders through canyons and towns alongside the river. It’s a safe and scenic way for bikers, hikers, and walkers to journey through Avon and into Eagle, Vail, or Edwards. While it makes a terrific recreational route, it’s also excellent for your daily commute to and from work.
Saddle Ridge Loop
The Saddle Ridge Loop offers an excellent workout for hikers or bikers. The trail’s erosions make it difficult in certain spots (while making it imperative that you stay on the main trail and out of the closed areas). Those up to the challenge are rewarded with majestic views of Avon and the Beaver Creek ski area.
Village to Village Trail
The Village to Village Trail dances through the slopes of Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch, and the Arrowhead Resort. You can travel uphill, but your calves will be happier if you opt for the downhill route. While the trail features lots of flat space, it’s also known for its steep switchbacks.
Elkhorn Trail
The Elkhorn Trail is just under 6 miles (out and back) with 1,000 feet in elevation gain. It is considered moderately complex (it’ll be much harder for anyone unfamiliar with altitude). It’s a popular route for hikers and bikers, although you might find fewer crowds if you go in the middle of the week instead of on the weekends.
Metcalfe Creek Road
The Metcalfe Creek Road is a 6.2-mile out-and-back trail that offers a challenging trek. It’s not as popular as more accessible trails, but you’ll likely come across a handful of hikers, bikers, and off-roaders. Mountain bikers are especially drawn to the trail after a rainstorm, as the muddy ride offers a messy, exhilarating thrill. Your adrenaline will thank you, even if your laundry doesn’t.
